Germany-Berlin 2009

August 17, 2009

Dankeshein!
So, few month ago, as some of my 0.9 readers of this blog remember, I was at Ben Gurion airport, enjoying a very cool tour, and announcing its even better then really flying!
Well, I was wrong.

It was the night of 6th of August, it was cold, and the birds were hiding. The streets were empty, and there was a certain vibe in the air, a feeling that everything is about to fall apart.
Ahhh, who am I kidding? it was just another freaking hot Israeli summer day.
Me, my father, and my mother were driving to ben gurion airport, yes, again, but this time, we were heading for the real thing.
It started pretty funny actually – as you can imagine, Israeli temper, Hot day, 2 check in desk for 34242 people, long queues.
Doesnt sound funny yet? Just keep reading.
Well, yea, at this point it wasnt that funny, unless you consider sweat smell funny, but then the fighting started. Our line was mostly old and relaxed people, but the other lines… people were shouting, pushing, screaming, making scenes, and oh boy, it was a thrill to watch.
I mean, yes, most people will consider this situation sad and pathetic, but call me a sadistic person – it was freaking hilarious!
Well, we passed this part, and that part, border control, shmorder control, and then, Duty free! who oh, my first time at the new ben gurion duty free.
Very unexciting, and at this part I also realized that my grip is not working at all, not just under hot conditions :(
Well, we boarded the plane, and it was a pretty nice plane. 737-700, spacey, nice food for a flight, and suprising considering it was a low cost company – tuifly.
The flight was smooth, beside a sad incident which I am not allowed to talk about.
Anywho, we arrived at tegel airport, and from there we took a ride to our hotel, the holywood media hotel, which had our room ready at 7am instead of 3pm – great surprise, and great hotel.
I wont talk much about the hotel, I will just mention they are very nice, big rooms, great, amazing breakfast, and is located in a very great spot.
At this point I came to realize that the German public transportation system, at least in Berlin, is nothing less than a genius piece of art. Trains, metro, trams, buses – its freaking genius, especially when compared to israel public transportation system.
At the first day, we mainly hang out around the hotel area – we visited the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Bavarian quarter, europa center, kunfurtsendamn street, kadewe shopping center, and the charlotenburg palace, which we didnt enter, and as it got late, all my shots came out like crap.
and here they are, I mean, it is a photography blog after all :)

The 2nd day was dedicated mainly to the jewish life during the nazi regime.
We joined an Israeli group and an Israeli instructor, which was very emotional and great guide generally, we went to the grunweald hollocaust memorial, friedrichstrasse, we heard stories about the jewish history in berlin, famous jewish people, we went to the jewish cemetery, and saw the new jewish synagogue, and much much more.
Here are few shots:

Not even the trees can save you.

Grunewald train station was a major transport location for berlin jew`s. From there, many jewish families were sent by trains, from that train station to death, concentration, and labor camps all over europe.

Later in this very busy day, we went to the reichstag, and from there we walked to the very beautiful branderburg gate. Sadly enough, it was getting dark at this point, and we all know shooting handled with the kit lens and no flash at night is not the best idea.
Anyway, we visited the beautiful reichstag dome, which didnt have a very long queue, and gained a beautiful sight of Berlin.

And then, there was day 3.
Which wasnt any less than great, well, It was a great trip :)
anyway, we started with a visit to the museum island and unter den linden, and we visited the amazing pergamon museum, so many thing to see, photograph. It has some very impressive architecture and art there, a must see museum for anyone visiting the area.
Sadly enough, the outer part of the museum was under renovation, and I didnt get to upload the pictures from inside yet – this post will be updated later.
Right now, let me skip to the later part of this evening – potsdamer platz.
Potsdamer platz, and sony center in particular, is a beautiful piece of modern glassy architecture in the heart of the berlin. Skyscrapers, shadowmakers, and just a beautiful place. and yes, this part is also missing some pictures will be updated later.

Also in the 3rd days, we went to the beautiful, iconic and historic olympic stadium. It was closed due to the word light athletic championship taking place there, but I was still able to shoot this mega stadium from outside:
